Do you have to bleach your hair to dye it?

I have medium dark brown hair... it's actully auburn... and I want my hair to be blue (only for a week, so fading isn't an issue). It doesn't need to be bright blue, but it does need to be recognizably blue... even if it's dark blue. Do I have to bleach my hair for it to show at all? Or if I do bleach it, is the bleaching permanent? (Sorry, it sounds like it'd be obvious but I've never done it before)... I just dont want my hair to be an ugly blonde color after the week it's blue... I know it'll be funky for a while, but if it's bleached, will it always be that way? Thanks!

Don't bleach it, it weakens your hair and with excessive colouring it might even break off.

They make so many temporary colouring kits, and even coloured hair sprays. Go for that and the ease of being able shampoo it out without damaging your hair permanently.

no, unless you want to go light, but they have a special kind of dye that only tints your hair, so be careful what they put on you. you can also get your hair stripped. if ur not sure, you should probably go to a professional hair person.

Bleaching will take any color you have out of the strand. If you do that you'll be blue for a lot longer than a week. I would do a test on a small part of your own hair just to see how the blue might turn out.

First, bleaching your hair is not a good idea if you're looking for something temporary. Bleaching is definately permanent, and will damage your hair, probably to the point where your hair has a gross feeling and texture. If you're planning on getting your natural color back in a 1-2 month time span, don't count on it because the dye will hurt your hair, and your hair will be a nasty color for awhile :(

My best suggestion is to try just dying it to blue.

I have the same colour hair as you and tried to do this exact thing when I was a teen. It depends how blue you want it, now there are some dyes around that are blue-black which would work on your hair (try Schwartzkoft) but they are not that vibrantly blue. otherwise you would have to bleach it first, and yes, it is permanent, and yes it does go a VERY manky washed out colour very quickly. You can dye it back to it's original colour but it's SO bad for your hair, I ended up chopping most of mine off after a while cos it looked like straw so beware. if its just for a week you might want to consider spray on colour, they are better these days but have a hairspray effect so would'nt really work on loose hair, also avoid the rain unless you want to look like a smurf
